Columbus expands non-fatal shooting investigation team to West Side after 94% solve rate
COLUMBUS — Columbus police are expanding a specialized team dedicated to investigating non-fatal shootings to the city’s West Side following what officials say were significant results from the program’s original pilot. Mayor Andrew Ginther and Columbus Division of Police Chief Elaine Bryant announced Tuesday that the Non-Fatal Shooting Team will expand into Police Zone 3, which serves portions of Columbus’ West Side. City officials said Zone 3 was selected following an analysis of crime data. The program changes how police investigate shootings in which the victim survives. Instead of generally assigning a case to two Assault Squad detectives, the specialized team brings detectives and patrol officers together immediately to simultaneously handle the crime scene, interview victims and witnesses, collect evidence and pursue search warrants. The model was first launched in March 2024 in Zone 6, covering South Linden and Milo-Grogan. According to the city, the Zone 6 team recorded a 94% solve rate for non-fatal shootings in 2025, compared with a 53% citywide solve rate for those cases.
