Statement from Jessica Roach, CEO of ROOTT

To our community, supporters, and partners, it is with a heavy heart that I address the recent headlines surrounding current ROOTT Chief Operations Officer, Dorian Wingard. These charges are deeply personal, as I am the victim of the abuse he committed.

ROOTT is an organization dedicated to empowering Black mothers and families, born out of that dedication, tradition and foundation in Black Birth work. I founded ROOTT out of love and hope for our people. For more than 20 years, I have poured my heart, time, resources, and energy into Black Maternal and Infant Health. I, in my personal capacity and through my work with ROOTT, have served many in this community and across the country. Yet, during the time that Dorian Wingard has been a part of this organization, I have faced a reality that starkly contrasts the purpose of our organization—a reality where my voice was silenced, my authority undermined and my spirit constrained by nearly constant emotional, mental and physical abuse.

I have been on a journey to protect ROOTT and myself. The journey to retake the organization in the face of such abuse has been arduous and the pain, immeasurable. But today, I stand before you stronger and reclaiming my voice and my power. It is my hope that other survivors, especially those who have not and maybe cannot speak out, will see themselves in my story. I want them to know that they are not alone; they have allies who will believe them and will willingly offer support and guidance.

Dorian Wingard’s actions are not reflective of the values ROOTT stands for and are disrespectful to the Ancestors and Elders that have poured their knowledge into me. It is crucial for me to speak out in order to ensure that the voice of all victims are heard and respected, and to make it clear that in finding my voice and power, his predatory actions will no longer be tolerated. The behavior Dorian Wingard exercised over me and exhibited towards ROOTT has no place in our organization or community.

Effective immediately, the organization is taking decisive steps to remove Dorian Wingard from the position as COO. ROOTT remains committed to its purpose and mission, and we will continue to work tirelessly to support and empower the families we serve. We ask for your understanding and support as we navigate this challenging time and take the necessary actions to reclaim and uphold the integrity and values of our organization.

This is a very difficult experience but also a time of deep reflection and learning. It is also a reminder of the values and principles of Reproductive Justice that this organization was founded upon. We must stand up against abuse in all forms.

To everyone who has supported this organization and this movement, I thank you and I ask that you do so now more than ever. Together, we will continue to build a future where we are protected and our voices are heard, respected, and empowered.

In solidarity,

Jessica Roach, LPN, MPHCEO, ROOTT
