Black Airman Killed by Florida Deputy: A Tragic Pattern of Injustice

On Friday, May 3, 2024, 23-year-old Black Senior Airman Roger Fortson of the United States Air Force was tragically shot and killed in his own home by a Florida Deputy Sheriff. The officer was responding to what was reported as a domestic violence dispute by a neighbor named Karen.

Upon arrival, the Deputy Sheriff knocked on Fortson's door. When Fortson opened the door with his licensed firearm pointing down, the officer fired six bullets into him. Attorney Ben Crump, representing Fortson's family, has condemned the shooting as unnecessary and demands accountability.

This incident highlights a disturbing and recurring pattern of police violence against young Black men. Fortson, a dedicated service member, was in his own home and presented no threat. The false report made by Karen only exacerbates the tragedy.

The video evidence shows Fortson was on a video chat with his girlfriend, with no signs of domestic violence present. This situation calls for justice not only for the Deputy Sheriff but also for Karen, whose false report led to this fatal encounter.

I urge President Joe Biden to support the Fortson family and the United States Air Force, recognizing the sacrifice Fortson made for his country. Law enforcement and the military should protect and honor our service members, not endanger their lives.

To the unnamed officer, your actions reflect cowardice and a failure to uphold justice. Black lives matter, and it is high time for real accountability and change.
